Australia

2016 Supplementary Disability Survey

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) used the WG Short Set questions in the 2016 Supplementary Disability Survey (SDS). The 2016 SDS was conducted as a consultancy service for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide an internationally comparable disability measure for Australia.
This survey used the exact wording of the WG Short Set questions and response categories and was adapted for telephone interviews. The questions were asked of an adult responsible for providing information on behalf of others in the household.
Visit the ABS website (www.abs.gov.au) for information including the key findings, data tables, the questionnaire and explanatory material (i.e. technical notes and quality statement). Detailed analysis of the SDS results and the relationship with the ABS 2015 Survey of Disability Ageing and Carers will be published in early 2017.

Botswana

SINTEF Living Condition among people with disabilities in Botswana, Report

SINTEF undertook this study in several African countries to assess living conditions among people with activity limitations in Southern Africa.

These studies used the exact wording of the WG Short Set and response categories.

The survey in Botswana  started in 2011 and will be finalised in 2014.

Brazil

2010 Population Census

In their 2010 Population Census, Brazil used the Washington Group recommendations.

Cambodia

2013 Socio-Economic Survey

This survey (SES) defined disability as per the 2008 recommendations by the Washington Group. The questions asked and the response catagories deviated from the Short Set.

You can read the results of the survey in the 2013 Socio-Economic Survey Report – chapter 8, page 75. The original 2013 Questionnaire is an excel file and the questions on disability are found in tab 14.

Haiti

2012 Household Survey

This survey reviewed the Representation and Evaluation of Disability in Haiti for which there is a detailed report and methodological analysis.

This survey used the exact wording of the Washington Group Short Set and response categories.

2014 Population and Housing census (PHS)

Myanmar used an abridged version of the WG Short Set in their 2014 census.

The 2014 PHS report contains the questionnaire on page 254 and the results are found on page 26.

This survey uses the exact wording of the WG Short Set and response categories.

Samoa

2014 Demographic and Health Survey

In 2014 the Samoan Bureau of Statistics undertook a Demographic and Health Survey that included a disability component:
•included the WGshort set of questions for those 18 years of age and older
•included the WG/UNICEF module on child functioning and disability for those 2 through 17 years of age (2 age cohorts: 2-4 years and 5-17 years)

South Africa

Cognitive Testing

 South Africa ran two studies to test the applicability of the WG Short Set in South Africa. Both studies recommended use of the WG Short Set for the 2011 Census.  1

2009/2010 National Household Survey (NHS)

You can download the Abridged Report of the National Household Survey which contains the questionnaires and results. This survey used the WG short Set with minor changes to the wording.

United States of America

National Health Interview Survey

The NHIS is a cross-sectional household survey of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of the United States, conducted annually by NCHS since 1957.

Data are collected in person from a sample based on a multistage probability design. Annually, the NHIS comprises approximately 35,000 households containing about 87,500 persons per year. Functioning and Disability module is part of the Sample Adult file: includes about 17,000 persons.

The NHIS uses the WG short set exactly as recommended.

Zambia

SINTEF undertook this study in several African countries to assess living conditions among people with activity limitations in Southern Africa.
